Clear Up Your Skin With The Correct Way To Wash Your Face!

WashingFace   With over ten years owning a Skin Care Boutique in Hermosa Beach I’ve helped so many clients clear up their skin and taking the dullness away to give them a wonderful healthy glow. One way that I did it was the one question and concern that I heard a lot: “How should I wash my face? Do I wash twice a day? Do I use the same cleanser both times?” After a long day one of that last things you want to do right before you go to bed is splash cold water on your face-I totally get it. One of my tricks that I do (and also helps me with snaking at nighttime) is brushing my teeth and washing my face right after dinner. Even if I cheat and have a snack, at least I’m half way thru my nighttime regimen.

Because all skin is different and there are so many skin types there isn’t one answer for everyone however, there are guidelines. With my face washing steps I have helped so many of my clients clear up their skin with out harsh acne products.

It is more important to wash your face thoroughly at night than it is in the morning. The day’s activities leave dirt and grime on your skin and when you add a little perspiration and oil combined with make-up and dirt, your pores clog right up. Although mineral make-up protects your skin from the suns harmful rays and pollution you really need to cleanse it off at night and prepare your skin for your wonderful anti-oxidant serums and creams. For most skin types I like to recommend a milky cleanser at night. I like milky cleansers because they loosen up the dirt in your pores without clogging and purify your skin with gentle cleansing ingredients. If you have more oil than not, there are foaming cleansers such as Obagi’s Gentle Facial Cleanser that cleanses your skin and won’t dry it out. In the morning, a gentler cleanse is sufficient because you did such a great job cleansing your skin the night before! I like Decleor’s new Foaming Mousse cleanser  because it cleanses the skin without harsh drying ingredients.

I recommend using a moist washcloth to cleanse your skin. The reason is because when used correctly it removes all the dirt and make up and also gives the skin a light daily exfoliation that is much needed. I recommend using a clean washcloth morning and night. I never recommend re-using washcloths because they harbor bacteria.

Here are the simple steps for thorough cleansing of your skin:

  1. Wash your hands and moisten your face with water.
  2. Massage in face cleanser all over face and neck, usually no more than a dime size of product.
  3. For eye make-up removal I recommend using an eye make up remover, I like Dermalogica’s Eye make-up removal gel.
  4. Wet a clean washcloth with lukewarm water and in upward movements with little pressure remove face cleanser. Apply your eye make up remover and remove gently from outward to inward with washcloth.
  5. Rinse/splash with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  6. Always use a toner after a cleanser to balance the PH of your skin.
  7. Follow with appropriate serum, moisturizer and sunscreen of course!

Now that you know how to maintain your skin at home, come into Molly’s Skin Care Boutique for the best facial in Hermosa Beach and we’ll help you with any other skin care concerns you may have and recommend the perfect skin care regime for you!

I’d like to hear from you! Please send any skin care questions or blog suggestions to skininfo@mollysskincare.com.

The importance of facials

Back in the day, people thought that getting a facial was a luxury that only the rich and famous could afford. Nowadays, people realize that it’s a fundamental part of both skincare and wellness, and should be a part of your regular maintenance regime, even if there’s nothing “wrong” with your skin. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatologists recommends facials every four to six weeks to reduce wrinkles, eliminate blotchiness, treat sun spots, improve skin tone and improve acne.

Basically, facials are the ultimate in anti-aging treatments. The deep cleansing, exfoliation and hydration only a facial can provide rids the skin of dirt, debris and environmental factors to help your skin maintain a healthy balance and its ability to fight aging. Professional cleansing also enables deeper penetration of products and therefore better results. Research shows that getting a facial is even better than getting a good night’s rest since facials remove toxins and dirt accumulated over time—though we definitely recommend getting both!

An additional benefit of receiving professional facials is that the massage performed dilates the vascular system, which helps to eliminate toxins and encourages the absorption of nutrients and moisture to the deeper layers of the skin—and it gives your skin a healthy glow that’s to die for. In addition, the massage makes you feel better and the knowledge that you are taking care of your skin improves your overall wellness.

Start scheduling facials regularly for your skin’s health. Think of these treatments in the same way you do your regular doctor and dentist appointments. Facials are a great investment, as your skin will appear more toned, radiant and healthy for four to six weeks.

Prep your skin for winter

Even though we’re in sunny California, we still need to consider the climate change and wind’s effect on our skin when transitioning our skin care regime. Since we’re renowned as the purveyor of Hermosa Beach’s best skincare and spa services, we’re happy to share some tips for preventing the dull, flaky skin and red cheeks that colder weather coupled with lower humidity can cause.

Hydration is key to reduce aging effects and keep skin from getting flaky and chapped. Drink water like it’s the heat of summer, eat a diet rich in Omega 3s and avoid using really hot water on your face and body. Alcohol-based, oil-reducing cleansers are too harsh this time of year. Choose gentle, fragrance-free face washes and stay away from acne medicine as much as you can. A great choice is Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser.

Even if the sun isn’t out, moisturizer is essential during winter. Slather it on! Using an oil-based moisturizer can help form a better layer of protection during drier months. Using a few drops of essential oil under your daily moisturizer will keep your skin hydrated without feeling greasy. I recommend Decleor Angelique for sensitive skin or Rose Oil for more hydration to nourish your skin during winter.

Wear sunscreen every single day—no matter where you are or what you’re doing. If you go skiing or snowboarding somewhere, remember that the chance of UV exposure and photo damage is even higher in the snow than on the beach.  Try Dermalogica’s Extra Rich Face Block or Obagi’s C-Sun Guard SPF 30, both available online or in South Bay’s best skincare spa, Molly’s Skin Care Boutique.

More Reasons to Tan Indoors

At this stage of the game, California natives know that sunbathing is aging and that indoor tanning beds are even worse. Now legislation has taken it a step further—California bans anyone under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices, and at least 31 states regulate their use by minors. This says a lot about what we already know about the potential damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Thankfully, those who are averse to the pale look can get an OrganiTan at Molly’s Skin Care Boutique, the South Bay’s best skincare services spa.

Such regulation stems from research indicating that high risk exposure happens more commonly in teens. In addition, studies show that childhood sunburns and overexposure significantly increases the possibility of developing skin cancer later in life. Sun exposure causes most nonmelanoma skin cancers, which over a million people are diagnosed with annually, according to the American Cancer Society.

There are two categories of skin cancer, Melanoma and nonmelanoma. While Melanoma is treatable if caught early, it’s likely to spread to other parts of the body and is potentially fatal. In 2008, the American Cancer Society estimates that there were 62,480 new cases of Melanoma and 8,420 Melanoma-related deaths. Some risk factors for Melanoma include overexposure and blistering sunburns during childhood or teenage years.

The American Cancer Society recommends avoiding sunlight when the sun’s rays are strongest, between 10 am and 4 pm, and to avoid tanning devices and sun lamps. At Molly’s Skin Care Boutique, we recommend wearing sunscreen daily and to use safe indoor tanning options like our reputed OrganiTan, created by Molly herself. This proprietary blend is non-streaking, odorless and comprised of 100% natural certified organic sunless tanning ingredients. 20 years were spent perfecting this formula—and it shows.

Most self-tanning and spray tan formulas dry out your skin and emphasize fine lines. OrganiTan actually hydrates—it’s infused with multi-vitamins and a hyaluronic acid moisture treatment so it’s got anti-aging benefits. The cast of Dancing With the Stars and the Los Angeles Clippers’ girls are avid users and the product is quickly getting into spas across the country.

Reasons to Use PCA SKIN Products

At Molly’s Skin Care Boutique, we’re not just about offering the South Bay’s best skincare and spa services—we also carry some of the best skincare products available. We only sell those we believe to be the top skincare lines in the market: Decleor, Dermalogica, Epicuren, Glimpse, Molly’s Organic Skin Care, Obagi and PCA Skin. In this post, we’re covering PCA Skin.

The reason we chose to carry PCA Skin is because their products produce maximum antiaging and skin clearing results without harsh irritation. Founded by an aesthetician and several dermatologists who together formed Physicians Care Alliance, LLC, PCA Skin employs intensive scientific research to develop safe yet effective products that treat conditions including acne, aging, rosacea, sensitive skin issues and hyperpigmentation. A series of PCA Skin peels in conjunction with their products can even out skin tone, reduce hyperpigmentation (sun spots), and get acne under control to reveal beautiful, youthful looking skin.

Another great aspect of PCA Skin is that the company does not use synthetic colors or fragrances, nor do they perform animal testing. All products are created with skin constituents, which are ingredients naturally found in the skin, and fully tested in case studies with patients from their medical practice. In addition, PCA Skin was the first to provide these products to both the medical and clinical aesthetics markets—in fact, their peels are viewed as the best in the industry, acknowledged in prominent medical textbooks as the originator of modified and enhanced Jessner’s chemical peel formulations.

While many believe that you need to be aggressive to get results, PCA believes that less is more. Rather than employing overly aggressive treatments, PCA skin promotes gentle treatments that deliver substantial and consistent outcomes.

Undo the damage from the summer with PCA Skin products and a series of PCA skin peels at Molly’s Skin Care Boutique, Hermosa Beach’s best skincare and spa services. A series of five peels will transform your skin.

Small Changes That Up Your Skincare Game

Sometimes small changes can have a huge effect on our lives. It’s the same with skincare—by implementing small lifestyle changes and instilling positive habits, you can improve your skin over time and look younger than ever. Making some of the changes below, which we recommend to our clients at Molly’s Skin Care Boutique, the South Bay’s best skincare and spa services provider, will result in a lifestyle transformation that is reflected in your skin.

Get facials regularly. Facials increase circulation, stimulate blood flow and can help prevent wrinkles. They are also a great way to pamper yourself, which boosts overall wellness.

Use SPF daily—even on cloudy days. Exposure to sunlight accounts for 90% of premature skin aging symptoms. Sunscreen should be applied every single day—studies show that using SPF daily is much more effective that intermittent use.

Eat less sugar. Sugar ravages skin, due to glycation, the process in which sugar in your bloodstream attaches to harmful molecules called Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) which damage the proteins in your skin that keep skin firm and elastic, like collagen and elastin. This damage leads to wrinkles and sagging. AGEs also deactivate the body’s natural antioxidant enzymes, leaving you more vulnerable to sun damage.

Drink more water. Water carries nutrients to every cell in your body, flushing out toxins and boosting circulation. The result is a radiant complexion.

Exfoliate regularly. Removing dry skin cells from your skin’s surface is the best way to unclog pores and reveal glowing skin. For best results, try microdermabrasion or a series of peels at Molly’s Skin Care Boutique, where you can get Hermosa beach’s best skin care services.

Eat less meat and more fish. The omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, tuna and halibut reduce inflammation and keep your skin cells hydrated and strong. Research shows that diets low in essential fatty acids can result in dry skin and premature wrinkles. You may also want to take fish oil supplements to restore suppleness to your skin.

Get Some Color!

At Molly’s Skin Care boutique, we don’t just offer the best skincare services in the South Bay—we’re a skincare information resource as well. This week, we’re talking about diet, since the foods we eat are not always about losing or maintaining weight—they affect our skin as well.

A colorful diet is a great way to help keep your skin looking and feeling great! All the best, unprocessed foods are naturally full of color. They also tend to be low calorie and have a host of healthful phytonutrients and antioxidants that will help your skin stay young longer. Antioxidants help fight free radicals, which are linked to wrinkles, age spots and cancer, and also help prevent wrinkles and possibly even reverse cell damage. The best way to address different aging concerns is to eat a variety of antioxidants—this is easy to do, just eat lots of color! Below are some great choices to help you in the antiaging fight.

Carrots and Sweet Potatoes.
Both are packed with Betacarotene, which gives you a healthy glow. Studies have shown that it can actually repair sun damage.

Blueberries. Densely packed with salicylic acid, fiber, carotenoids, and vitamin E, blueberries also contain more powerful antioxidants than any other fruit or veggie. They boast a high concentration of polyphenols, an extremely beneficial antioxidant with anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic properties.

Tomatoes. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, which promotes healthy cells and protects against environmental damage, especially sun exposure – it actually raises the skin’s sun protection factor. Tomatoes also help the skin retain moisture.

Oranges. Packed with Vitamin C, which is involved in collagen production and protects cells from free radical damage, Oranges are also a good source of folic acid.

Spinach. This leafy veggie is packed with lutein, which increases skin hydration, elasticity and skin lipid content.

Watermelon. This juicy fruit offers a great way to hydrate your skin. Studies show that eating watery fruit is much more effective than drinking water because fluid is transported directly into the cells. Since watermelons are 97% water, they’re a great hydration bet.

The perfect prescription for youthful looking skin is to get some color in your diet, combined with regular facials, microdermabrasion and other skincare treatments from the South Bay’s best spa and skincare services provider, Molly’s Skin Care Boutique.

Beauty Sleep—An Anti-Aging Fundamental

Sleep is critical to our health, well-being, and of course, beauty. Studies show that sleep deprivation reduces productivity and is linked to a variety of age-related illnesses, including obesity, heart disease and depression, among others. Lack of sleep can also cause haggard, dried-out skin, puffy eyes and dark circles.

Nighttime is when our body repairs and rejuvenates itself, and when you don’t get enough sleep, it shows in your looks.  Getting 7-8 hours per night should be the foundation of your antiaging regimen. However, keep in mind there’s such a thing as too much sleep, which can result in exaggerated bags under your eyes.

Once you’ve figured out the right amount of sleep for yourself, there are several things you can do to make the most out of dreamland. Start by training yourself to sleep with your head elevated on a couple of pillows to prevent fluid from accumulating around your eyes, which results in puffiness. While it’s important to invest in good pillows, it’s also essential to find a good pillowcase. Silk or satin cases prevent you from waking up with major creases on the sides of your face, which ultimately, can become wrinkles or permanent lines.

For skincare, choose a hydrating moisturizer that’s right for your skin tone to boost cell repair and renewal. Look for products with natural ingredients such as vitamin A, which is good for oily, problem skin because it accelerates the natural renewal process or vitamin E, which will nourish and strengthen dry, aging skin. Some great nighttime moisturizers we carry at Molly’s Skin Care Boutique, the home of the South Bay’s best skincare services, include Epicuren’s Evening Emulsion, Decleor’s Essential Night Baume and PCA Skin’s Silkcoat Balm or Re-Balance Moisturizer.

Some more simple tips for attaining deep, restorative sleep are:

1. Keep your bedroom dark and cool.
2. Go to sleep within two hours and rise within one hour of the same time every
day.
3.  Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and heavy meals, which suppress deep sleep, within three hours of bedtime.
4. Use your bed for rest or sleep, not for working on your laptop or watching television.
5. Take a bath or sip warm milk or herb tea before bed to raise body temperature and help induce sleep. Chamomile tea is a good choice.
6. Stop working two to three hours before bedtime.
